Are You Chronically Dehydrated, like 75% of Americans?

You can’t lose weight if you are dehydrated. The average American drinks two glasses of water per day, while they should be drinking more than eight. Most of the time, you’re not hungry, you’re just thirsty. Here’s why you need to drink water. And the right amount.

by Will Perego and Dr. Eric Wood, ND

Water makes up to 70% of our bodies and is critical for our health. Proper hydration allows our bodies to efficiently perform many tasks, including thinking, burning body fat, reducing appetite, boosting metabolism, sleeping, and exercising. On the contrary, dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, brain fog, kidney stones, decreased kidney function, urinary tract infections, intestinal failure, hypertension, and even dementia.

Many independent studies show how just a 1% reduction in our body’s total water content weakens the functionality of several organs, our cognitive ability, and our mood. Even a slight level of dehydration can harm our physical and emotional wellbeing.

Yet, decades-long pervasive advertisement has induced consumers to drink soft drinks instead of water. What a shame. The sugary and chemical content of regular and diet sodas cause weight gain and other health problems.

1- Why you need to drink water

How many animals besides humans have you seen taking sodas, energy drinks or sport drinks? Let me guess. None. And for a good reason. Water is the real thing. Once you replace all the unhealthy drinks for water, you’ll rediscover how delicious, refreshing, and healthy water is.

The following are water’s main health benefits:

  • Muscle stamina
  • Proper digestion
  • Weight loss
  • Clear skin
  • Joint health
  • Waste removal
  • Brain peak performance

2- Acceptable water substitutes

If losing weight and being healthy are important to you, these are acceptable water substitutes:

  • Seltzer
  • Herbal teas (non-caffeinated and unsweetened)
  • Homemade vegetable juices
  • Very limited homemade fruit juices (due to their sugary content)
  • Homemade bone broth
  • Coffee, black tea or green tea (up to two cups per day, due to their dehydrating effect; and before 2pm, to not alter your sleep)
  • Avoid all other drinks

3- What’s the right amount of water for you

Here’s the formula to calculate your daily water intake:

YOUR WEIGHT (in ounces) DIVIDED BY TWO = YOUR DAILY WATER INTAKE (in fluid ounces)

And when to take it:

  • 2 glasses when you wake up
  • 1 glass before going to bed
  • 1 glass 30 minutes before meals, to reduce appetite
  • No water during meals, if possible, to increase nutrients’ absorption
  • No water for 2 hours after meals, if possible, same reason as above
  • Split the rest of your daily water intake throughout the day
